New addition…Yay!!

When I first started all of this……. I wanted this, and now it’s FINALLY HERE!!!!!!

What did I start you ask?  Well maybe I should start there.

About 2008 or so…..strong emphasis on “or so”, I’ve never been good with time. ….I decided I had a goal in life: To create a better world.

How does one do that?

Step 1 – Decide to create a better world or “Change the World!” or “Create positive change.”

So I decided that was my goal of life. Wrote it down on a piece of paper. Wrote down some ideas on how one would do that. I stopped there, that was the end of my lunch break. I was teaching and many would say that I was changing the world at that time. I knew there was more and there was more I could do.

I decided to write and inspire people…that wasn’t very lucrative and I was quickly very poor and very homeless. Turns out that having a place to write in the first place is a better idea than just jumping into a freelancing career. I explained to the Universe/God/the great energy/the great geomatrician that maybe I jumped to quickly.  I then explained that I wanted to change the world…where do I start? Right here it would be really neat if I said that the Universe opened up and gave me a magnificent sign by god…but that didn’t happen. The water lapped against the dock I was standing on and I lost my house, my car, and I sold off a lot of my belonging to feed myself, the dogs, and get an apartment.

Because the library had air conditioning AND I needed a job, that’s where I spent a lot of time that summer. After a very frustrating week, I put into a job site search engine: Change the world!   A crazy idea…but those are the ideas that change lives. The Universe spoke:

I begin working at a Domestic Violence outreach center speaking to 100’s of people about preventing domestic violence and violence in general.  I worked there for three years and it was great. However, around year 2 a very odd thing happened to me: I cleaned my book shelves. As I was cleaning three books fell on my head…they were all the same book.

A great book and I suggest every person read this book.

A great book and I suggest every person read this book.

For those who do not know this book, it is a metaphoric tale about how you can’t rely that something is going to stay that way forever. You have to constantly be preparing for the next step and often times, the next step is better than the pone you’re on. Another great way of saying this: The only constant is change.

Wow! Maybe that’s a good idea. Two days after that, I received an email that I had to explain how I was going to be able to keep my job if the federal funding ran out. The signs and writing was on the wall….and a friend of mine said, upon me telling them this information, what are you going to do?  I explained I wasn’t sure. They then asked the fatefull question:

What do you WANT to do?

My answer was the same as 3 years earlier: I want to create a better world.

She asked:What is that?  How do you do that?

After a 10-15 minute explanation I said, “In short, I want to Motivate People to create Positive Change…and Motivating For Positive Change was created! At first it was just a blog….then it turned into a company.

I knew since I attempted the freelance idea, that I needed to get to a lot of people. But how?  The blog now has 144 followers (thank YOU…yes you reading this…Thank you!!!) The Facebook page (Please like if you haven’t!!!) Speaking to people (About 100-200 each time) I have three books of poetry and one non poetry book on the way (Hint Hint…new book coming soon!!!)

What’s the next step?

Chad Herman's column Inspiring Change in The Largo Leader

Chad Herman’s column Inspiring Change in The Largo Leader

A newspaper column…YES!!!

When I was freelancing I wanted this. I asked for this, I begged for this, I proposed this…..NOTHING! But my path is to help others, so now it’s working. Before i just wanted the column. Ahhh…everything makes sense now.

Chad Herman now has a monthly column in the local newspaper The Largo Leader named Inspiring Change. This is another way I can reach more people to achieve my ultimate goals: Live(not lose everything again) and create a  better world.

Look for the next post to read the column….

Paper the world with positivity

A simple thought placed in a populated area.

Taking some of my own advice, I decided to go out and inspire and motivate people with one of my own ideas: Put up positive message around your neighborhood like they do with lost dogs and cats.

A few days ago, I printed up 58 pieces of paper that had 4 different messages on them: Smile and be happy, Be nice to all people, Do something to help people, and End all violence.

As i walked down the main road, I thought about where people would look.  So, I did my best to put the messages in places that people would see and take notice.

That was about 2 weeks ago…I can’t tell you how many people have commented that it changed the way they did thigns that day. Now as you’re looking at these pictures, and reading the captions….why couldn’t you do this?  Why couldn’t this become something normal to see?

When I was taping this up, a person in a car asked what this means. I explained it means just that…Be Nice To All People!. He then asked,”Even when they aren’t nice to you?” I responded…Yes, we must be nice to all people. We are the examples of how the world should be and act. As ghandi put it, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

In hopes that the kids on the school bus could read it!

As bus stop you are looking for something to do..because you’re just sitting there. Might as well read and be abetter person…just for today.

On every pole, on every corner, on every 4 way stop…positivity is spread.

Stop right now! Stop right now and do something to help people. Almost 2 weeks after putting these up, these signs are still on these stop signs!

Have a seat…and help end all violence!

Please, if you decide to duplicate this…post it in the comments or send it to me and I will post it on the blog. Let’s start a movement.

5 young kids ask us to end climate change

There’s an old native American quote that says: We do not own this earth, we are simply borrowing it from our children, our grandchildren, our great grand children.

When I look at my children, then I look at the adults around us…I know that they are where we were at one point.

If I could go back in a time machine…what things would I ask the kids of the 1920’s, 30’s, or 40’s to think about, and work to prevent?

How about…don’t drop the bomb and let’s end the nuclear war thing right now?

How about….let’s protect the animals that are going away?

How about….fix the emissions of your cars, reduce the carbon output, oils not the answer?

Now, the kids are doing just that.

In this video they are asking, pleading, praying we do something… end climate change, because life on their earth is a lot different than the life on our earth.

Change the world with your money

Sit back.

Allow me to tell you a story:   A person came up with an idea for a product. It was catchy. It had infomercials. It had celebrities posting with it, labeling, endorsing it…the whole nine yards (to use a colloquial saying that means to shoot 9 yards(27 feet) of amo at the enemy) Then it was sold at the high end and the low end markets. It was even made in the USA..which brought it even more consumers and fan based. It was a household name and so were the subsequent follow up  lines. They were so popular, a whole store was created around it. It was amazing! The creators and everyone involved sat back and counted their money.

Note: The product was made in the outskirts of Chicago. It was made in wharehouse that was not up to standards at all. They could not pass any of the minimum standards of hygene, labor, or structure. However, the code enforcers new jaguar, new zip code, and new bank account made sure they were never bothered. They churned out the product faster than any product before. However, when you give children red bull and methamphetamines, they work faster – but also die faster. When they grow up they are used as sex slaves, and another batch of children are moved in.

The company who funds this product is also the same company that creates ozone destroying products.

Is this a real story?  Yes, it is told, retold, and done, and redone every second in our world. We can watch this happen with everything from dusters, to vacuums, to cars, and beer.

Recently a shop just like this burned down and killed hundreds. But let’s look at how this is perpetuated:

step 1 –  person is enticed to get product (lived fine without it before).

Step 2 – person buys product.

Step 3 – money is sent to people who own child slaves and sex slaves.

No money – no reason to have the business which means no child slaves.

(BTW – If you don’t use the prostitutes, there will be no need for them)

Just don’t buy the stuff. Investigate where your stuff comes from. If this is the reality, don’t fund the problem.

Daily Dose of Motivation…porch newspaper

Bring a neighbor’s newspaper up to the porch

It always amazes me how the very little things change so many people’s lives. It’s amazing how the very little things help so many people…and people are so amazed that you have done it for them.

My daughter and I were walking down the street and I saw a Sunday newspaper sitting on the driveway, almost next to the street. I picked it up and walked it up to the door. On my way, I found two unopen cans of coke, so I picked those up and took them up there as well.  I set the newspaper and cokes on the step and begin walking away. A shirtless man came out holding back a slobbering rottweiler.

“What do you think you’re doing on my property BOY”, he screamed at me.

“Just bringing up your paper. I thought you’d like to have it on your front porch rather than on the road.”

He looked down, smiled, thanked me, and since that day…he has been amazingly nice to my kids. Giving them rides on one of the many motorized toys her’s accumulated over the years.

Is your city on this list?

Is you city on the list?

If not, go to 350.0rg to find out how you can start a campaign to get your city on this list!

What is divesting from fossil fuels?

It’s the opposite of investing in fossil fuels. These cities no longer put any focus on fossil fuels at all. They are eliminating plastic bags, they are creating a full recycling program. They are encouraging their citizens to use more public transportation. Actually, many of these cities have gone to completely electric public transportation. The electricity comes from non-fossil fuel sources. They are working towards a completely green environment. And this si jsut the beginning!

You and your city could be part of this….let’s do this now!

Wandering Star Art Gallery – All artisits welcome and wanted

Wandering Star Gallery – A home for artists of all kinds

I wandered down Westbay in Largo, fL the other day and passed a number of new and upcoming shops as well as some old favorites. It was an amazing to see the new vitality and exuberance that is in downtown Largo today. Downtown Largo is becoming what it use to be….the heart of the city.

As I was out walking and marveling a sign beckoned simply said: Hello Sunshine!

What?! Did this store just say hello to me?  As I looked into the window I was greeted with an eclectic array of art and fun!

Fun?  Yes. When your eyes dance and bounce from piece to piece, and they open wider and wider with wonder and exuberance and enjoyment…suddenly you are having fun. The enjoyment of simply looking at the front display was more than I could take…so I walked in. But before I walked in I was greeted with a comment that made me stop, think, and smile.

The name of the store is called Wandering Star Gallery. Wandering star..huh?  Wow, aren’t we all a wondering star. A star lookign for a sky that is perfect for just us. A sky where people will see us exactly as we want to be seen? Then as we get older we find, we wander because that is what we do. We wander the world interacting, loving, and being a part of all the others of the world. That is why we wander. An old saying says, “Not all those who wander are lost.” And when I walked into the Wander Star Gallery..I was not lost, I was home.

Immediately there’s a red ottoman that greeted me at the door. An ottoman with the most subtle piece of foliage painted on the top. A little plant growing across the top, a black plant on a serene white back ground. I really wanted to pull up a chair and prop my feel up on it…then suddenly it occurred to me..I was looking at a car tire. Really?  Wow!!!  This was a re-purposed, upcycled, recycled car tire artistically turned into an awesome ottoman. Wow. If this is the front, what else could be in store for me?

Why art…art of all kinds. Photography, oils, paint, clothing, and even sculpture. But that’s not where it ends. The walls are covered with art, but not in a static “it’s been there for a while” type of art, a vibrant revolving art showcase.

As the owner and curator of Wandering Star Tanya Galloway explained, “You will see different art each time you come in. I’ve put out a call for artists, and these wall will be covered by different artists all the time. Even some that are just starting!”

Did you hear that…that was a call to artists. If you’re reading this Wandering art Gallery at 220 W Bay drive in Largo is calling for artists of all ages and all types to display and sell your art in their gallery.

As I wandered the gallery there is hand made jewelry that is simply amazing and just beckons you to try on, to wear, to sport with that new outfit you just got. Then you spin around and there’s some awesome hand made soap and a great hand made rocking chair that simply asks:please sit, please relax….and have some of this local coffee and tea.  Sit down and learn a talent that you didn’t know you had.

A talent…what?  That’s when you realize there are known artist painting all around you, but there’s something slightly different. When I asked about these little pieces of art…Tanya simply said,”Oh, those are paintings done in our “Paint Like the Masters class”.

I can take classes?  Better. You can take classes, you and your kids can take classes, and you can create masterpieces! Wandering Star Gallery has a Friday Kids Art night, a afternoon Mommy and me art, Daddy and me art, and even art for everyone…these are the masters events.

So I signed up for the Kids night…and wow!  We made owls. Owls!!! We made owls out of clay.  Me and my kids can now say we can sculpt an owl, and my niece (a collector of owls) is ecstatic about this. We cut out our hands and then we made the earth. Hands and earth…ok?  Then the magical owner and curator of Wandering Star Gallery instructed us to hang out hands on our earth and suddenly all of the kids there, 7 in total, were taught that they hold the earth in their hands, and the earth will only be what THEY want it to be. Suddenly, the kids were motivated to make the world a better place.

Wandering Star Gallery…a must see place no matter where you are living.

Just spoke to Inspire Teens to end Domestic Violence

On April 6, I was asked by the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence to close out their teen summit.

What’s a teen summit?  FCADV, in a effort to educate and incorporate teens in preventing domestic violence, puts on an annual conference to educate, inspire, and motivate the teens in attendance to go out and work on preventing domestic violence.

These teens have taken the innititiate to decide to end domestic violence once and for all. Many people question what a group of teens can truly do?  The answer is amazing!

Groups of teens have put on carnivals, youtube videos and PSA’s with thousands of visits, websites for teens, and plays all over the country speaking to everyone about what a healthy relationship is and why we need to end DV.

In fact multiple student lead Anti Domestic Violence clubs and organizations have been created and reached national attention with congress and the senate.

The Teen movement is not one to be swept underneath the rug, and if you are about to,…all you have to do is do a youtube or google search about teens preventing domestic violence and you will see a whole new view of what Teens are doing….and you will wonder why adults aren’t doing more.

My goal was to inspire them. My goal was to motivate them. My goal was to make them want to do something to change domestic violence right now!

This is my speech. I share it so that maybe it will inspire you, or someone you send it to…to do something to End Domestic Violence!

“You, everyone in this room below the age of 20. You did not create this problem that we now call Intimate Partner Violence or Domestic Violence. You did not create this. You did not develop or continue it. This is not your problem. This is a problem you inherited. But you know something, everyone in this room above the age of 20..they didn’t create this problem either. They didn’t ask for, they didn’t perpetuate it, and they didn’t want it for you. This problem of domestic abuse was inherited from their parents, and their parents, and their parents. This is a very old problem that needs to be eradicated. This is a problem that has become normalized.

“This problem is so normalized that when some hears that you are part of a domestic violence relationship they say “oh yeah.” Because they not only know what that means. They’ve seen it before. They’ve heard about it before.  They’ve seen the PSAs. They’ve seen it on TV, movies, radio, songs, poems, viral videos, reality tv, and youtube. It’s been there and it always has been part of their lives. It’s so normalized that we accept it exists, we accept it’s happening, and we accept that it’s a normal part of our existence.

“There have been so many times that I have been in front of groups of adults and teens alike, and I say that we can end this and they respond: No We can’t. It’s been here, and it always will. It’s just “the way it is”, it’s “the way we are”, “it’s the normal way of things”. I’ve heard this blamed on drugs and anger as well as race, hereditary, and religion.

“But never once do people say “maybe, just maybe, there’s a way to end it. Maybe it’s not “just the way it is”. But we, right here, know there is a way to end it and stop the abuse altogether. We know abuse is taught. We know abuse is learned. We know there is a way to end this abuse…even though it’s so normalized now.

“Prevention is possible! Once flying was impossible. Once radios were impossible. Once TV was impossible. Once the 5 minute mile was impossible. Once computers were impossible. In fact, in 1901, the head of the patent office said “everything that there will never be any new inventions from this point on.”

“Once tobacco cessation was thought impossible. Once electric cars and solar panels were considered impossible. At one point it was considered normal and “just the way it is” when hundreds of thousands of people were displaced from their homeland and massacred by the millions because they were in the way.

“At one point our society and our reality had racial lines and lines that divided the different skin colors. Different nationalities, country-persons, and nationalities were not seen to exist in the same world. Once racial equality was sen as impossible.  And someone stood up and said, maybe just maybe we have the opportunity to end that. Maybe just maybe we have the ability to change this. Maybe we can change what so many people see as normal.

“Remember, this movement didn’t come about because of money, agencies, coalitions, or technology. This movement is not fighting to cure a disease or feed anyone….No. This movement was created by a group of people who believed that hurting anyone, especially the person you say you love is wrong. This movement was started by men and women who merely wanted husbands to stop hurting their loving mates. They simply wanted the violence to stop! We have inherited this movement and this cause from the great men and women who simply asked for everyone to see the violence against women as a reality that needed to stop. As Sir Isacc Newton said, I did not do this. I was merely able to do this,  by standing on the shoulders of giants. And my friends, that is exactly where we are. Look around at the older people in the room, they have lead us to this point. They have wielded their belief that there should only be respectful relationships free of power and control, and they have spread this message worldwide.  But remember, this movement was not formed to protect women, or men, or couples – No! This movement was created to protect all people from being abused and killed. Stop people from being verbally and mentally abused. Stop people from being sexually and physically abused. To stop people from being hurt and killed.

“But how?  How do we stop this. It’s such a simple answer to end all of this. It’s not like we’re looking for the exact right chemical that will attack a disease in just the right way to destroy it. It’s not like we are cre4ating life…thank you ladies in the room,  I for one am awed by the fact that you can do this! No…we are simply asking people to not hurt the one they love. All we have to do is stop people from hurting others. All we have to do is stop people from hurting the people they love. How simple it sounds. Btu now, let’s here from those who will inherit our planet and this problem.

“Young ladies and young gentlemen, what are your ideas given no budgets, given no restrictions…what can we do?

“Lets start teaching. Teaching every person from 1 to 101. We teach every person we can, and every person we can get in front of. We teach them what a healthy relationship looks like, feels like, and acts like. We talk about healthy relationships, we talk about gender equality, and we talk about how being a man is being respectful to women. Then we reteach the adults again and again…it takes longer for them to learn. We spread it in the newspaper, we spread it in the movies, the you tube videos,…add ideas they came up with, we blog about it, we tweet about it, we tumble about it, we kik about it, we instagram about it, we use every resource we have to make sure every person understands it. We make sure that healthy relationships are on every single persons tongue…then you know what happens: We succeed. We create a world where abuse is seen as foreign as the “N” word is, as foreign as the thought that “nazism is a good idea”.

“Today, we look back and see what our ancestors did to the races of color and the Native Americans and we can’t help but hold our head low because of these memories. But somebody did stand up. Somebody did end these atrocities, so that we CAN look back and shake our heads in disbelief.

“Want to hear something even cooler. You!  You are happening. Everything I just said is already starting to happen. Isn’t that awesome? People ages 9,10,11, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18 are already starting to do amazing things. Look at the ideas we just heard. The amazing great and incredible ideas we just heard? There are people who are in this room right now! That’s what’s so cool. We don’t have to wait till we become adults to create positive change…you’re doing it right now. We can do this right now! That is te beginning. You are creating that beginning. But you can’t stop! You must continue! After this conference, after this day, after you’re in your own school…you have to keep the momentum going. You can keep this up

“Now is that time. Now is the time to decide enough is enough. Now is the time to say, yes we can do something. Now is the time to say it is a time for change. Now is the time to say say we have a solution to ending IPV. Now is the time we change the world of our great grand kinds. Now is that critical turning point in history. Now is that moment. The moment where we change what’s normal. Now, is the moment we change what has been accepted for so long as normal. Now is the time we recreate what is seen as a “normal relationship” into what a “healthy relationship” truly is!

“Now is the time to decide we are the agents of change. We are the ones that will create a solution when the others couldn’t. We are the ones that will develop new ideas, develop better ways of getting into people’s heads, and WE are the ones that will see the end of this plague. The actions that we do,today, will reinvent the world and end this problem that has plagued our society for so long. Remember if someone doesn’t believe that this will change, it is your job to change their mind and show everyone that abuse can and will be a thing of the past.  We are the future, we are the answer. Now is the time to stand up and join me….stand up….join me up here.

“We are the agents of change and we are the ones that will change this world. Who are we? Who are we?

“Yes, we are the ones that will end this abused and change the status quo!

“We are the ones that will end this abuse NOW!”

As much as I can…I will post my speeches so people can read the speech that was heard by hundreds…and maybe, just maybe it will inspire and motivate them to do something.

Notice and accentuate the positive

Grade of F

Grade of F

I sat in the L-shaped desk and focused on the test I just got back. The big red “F” stared back at me. Most of the problems were crossed out and marked in RED. My paper looked like it was bleeding. I wanted to take the poor test to the doctor to have it sutured up it was bleeding so much. As I flipped through the test I noticed a pattern. I begin looking at the other kids’ paper and found that the numbers I got RIGHT were the ones they lost the most points for and a majority of the kids got wrong. We begin going over the tests, and as usual my answers were because of bone head mistakes: negative signs turned into positive signs, carrying a number, or putting a decimal point in the wrong place so that 32.68 was 3.268. A major difference no doubt, but a very very simplistic mistake. When we got to the hardest 4, and the ones worth the most points  – the teacher stopped.

I raised my hand and asked in my voice changing squeaky/deep voice why we had skipped those. He explained they were too hard for anyone, and everyone got them wrong.

What?  Really?  I got the hardest problems right. Nobody else got these problems right. They were so hard that I could tell the teacher was concerned about them even being on the test. In fact, they were so hard he wasn’t even going to go over them. And I got them right. Me! The F paper, C student in math (it takes me a while to understand it), got the hardest questions right. Wow!  Look at me…I’m smart! I’m smarter than smart…I’m like adult smart. It turns out that I have a talent for theoretical, high functioning calculus and physics. Interesting enough, the ideas that are presented are less like math to me, and more like a research project. Through the years, I’ve sat with many math and physics professors expounding on the theories of quantum physics, molecular and sub molecular theory, number theory, and mathematical perplexities….all while I was supposed to be being tutored for Algebra.

Why is it that we focus on what we are missing, we are lacking, or the things we don’t have?  This is what we’ve been taught. We’re not all the same people, so we aren’t going to get everything that the “general education” system is going to teach us. In fact, we all have natural abilities and talents we may never have the opportunity to use and show because of the way “school” is set up.

Is it really surprising that we are always focused on what’s wrong with our life, our work, or any given situation? This is what we are taught in our society. Look at all that you do wrong, so you can work on that and become better. However, when you see a mountain in front of you…it’s hard to think you’re going to correct all of that with the teaspoon in your hand. We are being set up for depression and failure. We are being set up to constantly focus on what’s the problem, where do we lack, and how are we going to fix that. If we need to fix, that means we are broken. What if we aren’t broken at all…in fact, we just work differently.

There are two types of computer people: Mac/Apple and Windows/Microsoft. Each fo these operating systems are different and vastly different to use. Because one works differently, does that mean it’s broken? just works differently.

What if we begin in school marking all the problems we got right? What if we showed students all the things they CAN do? What if we spent the same amount of energy looking at all the things that are right and are good with our relationship, life, work, etc? Instead of thinking about how we are bored (lack of something to do), why don’t we focus on all the things we can do, all the opportunities we have. Even if you have no money…you have the ability to do amazing great things. One word – The national/City park system.

Imagine what the world would look like if we focused only on what’s right…what do you think the world would look like?
