This process is currently hurting our earth so bad, that it may not recover.

The earth friendly, please save our earth, please stop global warming group 350.org has been picketing, speaking out, yelling, sitting, and asking everyone to stop letting this happen. We must speak with one voice and one let everyone, including the people who are doing this, that we CAN NOT do this.

Scientist say that once we begin employing the process of fracking, it is the death nail to our planet.

The death nail to our planet!!!!!!

This is more serious than anyone realizes. We are at a moment where we can look back and see the problems we have created in the past, why would we want our children to do the same thing.

The more we harm the earth and its inhabitants, the less time we have on this planet!

Please help stop Fracking!

How to help people stranded in traffic

It’s the worst feeling!

You’re driving around in your car. You might be singing, talking on the phone, listening to your gps, talking to your passenger, or simply sitting with your thoughts. Suddenly, without warning, your car starts to slow down. The gas, the ignition – nothing! Nothing is making your car go. You’re stopped! The thing about your car stopping is that it can happen at anytime, at any moment, in any weather, and anywhere you happen to be. Whether this happens in beautiful weather or horrible weather it stinks! Most of the time, it just so happens you’re stuck in a lane with traffic zipping by both sides.  You can call a tow truck, but you’re still going to have to sit there in the middle of the road with people yelling at you, beeping at you, and possibly hit you because they were paying attention to a “i love you” txt.  The ebst thing to do is get it off the road, but it’s really really hard to do that by yourself.

Helping others since the invention of the car.

Helping others since the invention of the car.

We as people have a moral obligation to help other people (please protect yourself as well though. If you gut says no, don’t go!) Everyone is going through this life doing the best they can for the situations they are in and the gifts they were born with. They are searching for happiness, searching for love, and searching for peace just as you are. We all run into problems, and we are here in communities and societies in order to help our neighbor. But what are you suppose to do when you come across someone int he middle of the road?

I come across people stranded in the middle of the road all the time. When I help these poor people, they tell me stories about how they’ve been sitting in the middle of the road for 20 min., 30 min, and even up to an hour and a half just waiting for someone to help them. Many people say this happens because the world is getting worse and worse. The other thing I hear people say when I tell them stories like this is that people are too selfish to stop and help someone else.

I decided long ago, I can’t and don’t want to see the world like this.

Instead of the theory that the worldis becoming worse (a view every gweneration has when watching the next generation). Instead of the theory that all people are selfish. I propose the theory that: People just don’t know what to do when they see someone stranded or “broken down” in the road.

Therefore, in response to this theory I’m going to help the world out. I’m going to show you step by step how to help people who are stranded in traffic.

Step 1: Find out if they need help

If someone is stopped with their flashers on in the middle of the road, you can’t assume they need help or want help for that matter. There is a myriad of reasons why people stop in the middle of the road. From stopping to yell or repirmand the kids, fixing the drinks, or even sneezing.

The reasons for not wanting help can range from gender socialization to help is already on the way. In fact, many people are taught never ever to accept help from a stranger. Because of the large number of rapes in our country (1 in 3 women), many women do not want to accept strangers’ help…justifiably so!

  • Step up to the car 4-6 steps from the door.
  • Ask through the window if they need help. (Don’t access them to roll down the window because that is an attempt to gain access to their car, and that just frightens people)
  • I know you can help!!!

    I know you can help!!!

Smile! (Smiling people’s drops people’s guard and shows that you are only trying to help.

  • Ask if they need you to call help (it’s always a good idea to call for help before you do anything so you can get them on their way)
  • Explain that it would be a good idea to move the car and you’d be happy to help.
  • Ask to help them move the car.
  • Accept their answer!

Step 2: Help!

Once you’ve established that the person is in need of help, you need to get the vehicle out of the way of traffic. Most cars are easily pushed and if the driver can help you, the 2 of you can easily push it. BUT, where are you going to push it?

The best place is always a parking lot. Look for a parking lot that has a driveway that isn’t that steep. Pushing a car up a hill isn’t fun.

Remember – The closest parking place might be behind you!

What if you can’t push it?

If you and the driver can’t push the car, get some help. Ask every driver, pedestrian, shop owner, walker on the street, etc. to help you push the vehicle. Remember that you decided to do this so you’re the one telling everyone where to go and who needs to push where. Also, once people start pushing, good people will pop out of the woodwork to help you. I promise!!!

Step 3 – Clear Traffic

Push and help!

Push and help!

When people are pushing a car most people will look out for you and try to move out of the way. What if there are a lot of cars in the way, you’re on a busy road, or you’re in the middle of an intersection? You’re going to have to get everyone out of the road with out getting hit and with out upsetting the other people.

In the middle of traffic – Have an idea of where you want to go and how you’re going to get the car there. If you’re in doubt ask the driver and the other people pushing. Always ask the driver if they’re ok with their car in the spot you’re going to push it too. Begin asking people if you can push the car in front of them. Go up to each car that will be affected and ask if you can cut in, if they’ll wait for you, etc.

If it’s in a bunch of cars moving – Politely ask people to stop by putting both hands in front of you and then waving them over your head. These will definitely get people’s attention, but it might not get them to stop. The ones that will stop, run over to their window and ask if they’ll please wait while you push this car in front of them. They have the right to say NO, and that’s ok. However, some will say yes. It’s always a good idea to ask them to help push if they say yes…what do you got to lose? Last ditch effort, just start pushing and hope people will not hit you. 90% of the time, they won’t!

Step 3 – Make sure Everything is OK?

Once you have the car safely out of traffic – Breath a sigh of relief that you’re done!

Ask the person if they’re ok. See if you can do anything else for them: Call a tow truck, call the police /paramedics, or call a relative. If someone’s already coming, ask if they’d like to you to stay with them for a bit.

Remember – This person just went through a traumatic experience and they may not want to be alone. Empathize with them and ask if they’re all right. Once they’re ok, go back to your day knowing you did a great thing!!!

If it was an accident, stay there to be a witness.

If you are mechanically inclined, offer your services.

In this way, you are now helping others and helping make the world a better place. Remember, every person who passes you is learning from you. They will pay it forward and the world will continue to become better and better.

Now everyone…you know how to help, all you have to do is go out there and do it!

Normal is the digital age for most students, and that’s awesome!

The new normal

The new normal

I came across this great post by Justin W. Patchin and Sameer Hinduja, authors of Words Wound on the Free Spirit Publishing blog and was amazed, inspired, and confused that not everyone knew this.

http://freespiritpublishingblog.com/2013/08/26/guest-post-what-teens-are-doing-online/

This post got me thinking. Thinking about ageism, amazing students I’ve taught, and the way so many adults see students and the information technology that’s out there. I have taught students who were masters at green screens, had their own social universe, and one who had an entire youtube show that debuted every week at 7pm on Tuesday not to mention his little 5 minute PSAs about bullying, drugs, and nonviolence. I was reading the comics on Sunday and Family Circle by Billy Keane was an interesting comic, but I’d heard the joke before many times….and I realized I’ve watched the time change. The mom was reading a nursery rhyme and it said “with bells on her finger and bells on her toes, she will have music where she goes.” The little baby asked, “Why didn’t she just take her IPOD?”

I remember that joke when it was: “Why didn’t she just take her discman”, “Why didn’t she just take her walkman?”, “Why didn’t she just take her boom box?”, ” Why didn’t she just take her radio?”

Each generation has it’s own form of this joke, just like each generation has their own definition of normal. Most generations get upset at the next few generations, because they don’t have….”hard work, ethic, morals, etc, Whatever! I’m often in the middle of a person in an ageism rant about kids these days, students these days, etc, etc…and I always ask. Have you looked up “kids changing the world” …they never have.

The simple idea is that each generation creates their own normal.

I was speaking to  a group of 100 students and I said, “If you have a smart phone, you can create a video to speak out against something you feel strongly about. At that moment, 20 kids stood up and walked into the back of the auditorium and started goofing around and making a ruckus. At the end of the talk, I answered some questions, shook some hands, met some great people, and took a lot of pictures. When I was done the kids were still back there, but now they were laying on the ground laughing about a youtube video on one of their phones. When I walked up, they all jumped to their feet. Before I could ask why they  didn’t want to listen to me, they screamed: We MADE a video and it has 200 hits!

Educate everyone! These students had taken my idea and instead of waiting for the guy to stop talking, like our generation would have done, they went and DID IT!  They walked into the back, thought of a cause they all hated, and then filmed a 3 minute video with stats and edits in 35 minutes. By the time I got off stage they had already educated twice the number I had spoken to, and had a very meaningful dialogue with about 50 people on youtube. In 35 minutes. Just because we don’t understand the computer and digital age, just because we aren’t putting our entire life on facebook, just because we aren’t living on the net and living off our phone, just because we aren’t 100% wireless, paperless, and digitally connected – doesn’t mean that our students shouldn’t be or that it is wrong.

I’m 38 and I saw my first desktop computer at age 10. I began using an apple II e in 7th grade. I took basic computers in 9th grade and watched by computer geek friends play the Oregon Trail and write basic programs that would play a simple song. The first website I went on was a site for a band in 1994. I got my first cell phone “for emergencies only” in 1995, and then began carrying one all the time in 2001. Depending on your age, this is about your timeline as well. But it isn’t our kids timeline.

Born into this technology!

Born into this technology!

A basic middle school student was born in 2001. They got on the internet for the first time before they could walk and they were streaming video by the time they were 4. Cell phone are and always have been in their world. For these students of 11+, this is not the digital age, the computer age, the tablet age, or even the age of information. This is simply normal. They have gone to school with kids who have iphones for as long as they can remember. Video games are not dependent on game systems, they are apps to download or games on websites. They’ve been using computers and computer games to learn since preschool. When you want to call someone you have 2 options – face to face or cell phone. When you want to hear music, watch a  video, or talk with friends you get on youtube or facebook. The new social media forest was created as they begin to mature into understanding of what social media is. Facebook, tumblr, kik, twitter, pintrest, are not odd names for computer programs on the web – no – they are familiar places to go to hang out with friends like other digital 1generations have hung out at coffee shops and soda fountains and the mall.

I for one think this is an amazing time to live. A time to reach out across streets, cities, miles, kilometers, countries, and world wide to speak and see people all over the world and in space as well as under the water. The internet is an encyclopedia that far exceeds anything we can dream of because it is only limited by our imagination. The stuff that was filled in our heads as elementary school kids is a reality now. If you want to find it, it’s at the click of a button. If you want to do it, there’s someone on the net who will teach you, help you, and even fund your project. If you want to be a star, you can and youtube and social media can help you. If you want to create and make – it’s all here on the net. Gone are the times when we had to wait to be something…you can be something right now. You want to be a singer, sing away…record it, post it, and listen to the critiques or get discovered for your talent. Do you want to write a book, the self publishing world is ready for you. You want to help

the world, change the world, or even just make your friends feel better it’s all possible! In fact, if you’ve become bedridden, that’s ok….your blog friends will travel for you…and they will bring the world to your desktop.  Because that’s today’s reality – the world at your desk top.

This is the new landscape, but only to us who remember the old landscape. To those that are growing into it, scrolling down to read a book, clicking to find your news, and creating a video to educate the world is pretty much the normal way of doing things.

How are you going to inspire students to use this new normal?

How are you going to use or use this new normal?

10 Things you can do with your smart phone right now to help the world become a better place

I remember when I was 10 years old my mom and I were driving through Rodeo Drive. I saw a guy holding a huge bag. Out of the bag was a long cord attached to the biggest phone I’ve ever seen. It was bigger than his head. We stopped at the light and I heard him speaking:

“Yeah, I’m on a mobile cellular phone. I’m standing on the corner talking to you. Really….I totally am. ”

Cell phone technology has come a long way and most people have a cell phone now. In response to this, everyone is marketing tot he smart phones. This is a good thing, because with more links to your phone the more influence you have over the general population. That means with the new smart phone technologies you can help the world become a better place in ways that were never thought possible.

10 Things you can do with your smart phone right now to help the world become a better place:

1. Post positive things on Twitter, facebook, tumblr, etc.

Remember, any positive thing helping others make the world a more positive place is helpful.

2. Create a positive video!

It’s not that hard, and you can do it on your lunch break.

3. Take positive pictures!

There are positive awesome things happening all around you. Take a picture of it and share it with the world.

4. Write positive things on others boards/walls/pages

everyone loves positive messages reach out and add some positivity to other people’s world.

5. Look up what people are doing right now to help change the world for the better.

The more examples that you and everyone sees of people doing positive things to help the world and the people in it, the more other people believe they can do the same thing.

6. Write an e-mail to a long lost friend.

Friends are friends even when you haven’t spoke in a while. When you rekindle that relationship, you have created another positive interaction in the world.

7. Reach out to people who have forgotten about you with a positive message.

John Lennon wrote: Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.  This is so very true. Reach out and make a long lost connection happy today.

8. Sign petitions at various sites.

There are so many sites that you can do this at: change, org, World Wildlife Federation.com, Animal Rights, Human rights

9. Download apps that can help you help others.

The app store is full of apps, and the things we download are: games, morphing people’s features, and more games. Why not look for apps that can make things better or make you better. A meditation app, daily scriptures, etc…there’s a lot out there to make things better.

10. Call up people to organize an event to influence people!

Events are simple to organize – get a bunch of people together and go do something. Simple as that.

If you do something…let me know and I’ll put it on here!

Chad Herman on the radio…THE SHOW

Yesterday evening I was honored to be invited to be on Going Solo Radio with CeCe Shatz!

I hope you were able to catch the broadcast…but if you didn’t here it is.

Let me first say CeCe is an amazing person and visionary herself. She has the biggest heart and loves what she does. If you take a look at her site Going solo Radio

You will see a myriad of support groups, get togethers, events, and of course the past shows from her awesome radio show. The premise of the site is to help those who have, or are going through, a divorce and help them realize  1)You aren’t alone 2)There are a lot of people out there like you 3)There is life, and it’s a pretty amazing one, after divorce. 4) There are people to talk to and hangout with that have similar stories and experiences.

With the US divorce rate up over 60%, this is definitely a needed service.

Highlights of the radio show

It was wonderful! We spoke about the many ways people can find happiness, joy, and many ways to pull themselves out of the depths of depression that we all get into at some point in our lives.  This depression especially happens after divorce(especially if you were the one left) The main take aways from the show was this:

You can be happy and happier, here’s how:

1.Gratitude – Thank you and thank everyone for everything that happens. As you know from reading this blog, I’m a big believer of being grateful for what we have and who we are.

2. Be happy about you: You are the captain, the person, and the leader of your life. You should be ecstatic about yourself. Unfortunately, what happens is that we get lost in the minutiae of nonsense of everyday life and begin beating ourselves up. Everyday, list 5 things that you like about yourself. Try to come up with different ones each day.

STOP THE HATE SPEECH!!!!! stop saying nasty things about yourself. “I’m dumb”, I’m an idiot”, I’m too slow”, I’m a failure”, “I’m fat”, “I hate my _________(add body part here). If it’s working it’s doing good. When you use the words “I am” you are directly creating who you are…and you ARE NOT these things.

Also, be happy about what you have. You have so much…you just don’t realize it. Think about it…somewhere in the world there is a person praying on their knees everyday for legs, fingers, hands, working organs, etc….and you already have these things. In many ways, you are other people’s prayer realized. Live like it!

3. Get involved with something bigger than you.

This goes along the same things I’ve written in this blog thousands of times. Go out and pick a cause…and put your energy towards it every day!  Every day! Every moment you go and do something that helps people and things around you, you are creating a power within yourself that is bigger than you could ever imagined. You are empowering your life with GOOD!

4. Know that you can change the world

Yes, you can!

You can make this world, your world, and our world a better place. I promise. If you heed the steps of number 3, you are already making the world a better place. If you work on telling everyone thank you(number 1)  and showing gratitude towards all people for being part of your life, you are showing and adding happiness into their life as well as yours.  Little by little…no matter what positive thing you do…you are creating a world of positivity.

There are so many more great quotes and ideas that came out of the show…watch the show for more!
